Welcome to the December edition of Open House, your regular update on the world of deposit protection.

Rent Smart Wales 

If you’re a landlord or letting agent, you’re probably aware that the Welsh government has begun implementing separate rules and regulations for the Welsh PRS, under The Housing (Wales) Act 2014.

The main change is mandatory registration and licensing through their Rent Smart scheme. The deadline for landlords and agents to register was 23 November 2016. If you’re operating in Wales and you don’t have a licence, you may be breaking the law.

We’ve summarised the key information about Rent Smart together to help you make sure you’re compliant with the legislation.

Recently, we visited two of the latest successful applicants to The DPS charity fund: Back on Track Housing and Shelter Scotland.

It was great meeting them and learning more about how they are going to use the money to help those most in need.
