Boo!

With Halloween creeping up on us, this month's issue of Open House might just give you the 'heebie-jeebies' when you take a look around 'Emma's’ House of Horrors, home to our spooky competition. You could be in with a chance of winning one of five family tickets to the London Dungeon.

We've also got some less haunting news to share with you, including the results of our rogue landlord survey, industry events we're attending, and a short look back at our popular dispute workshops.

We hope you enjoy the read and good luck with our competition.

What you had to say about tackling rogue landlords

As you may know, the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) opened a consultation on tackling rogue landlords and improving the private rented sector (PRS).

We saw this as a fantastic opportunity to canvass the opinions of our customers to see what you think of the proposals.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the survey; your feedback was invaluable in helping us shape our message to the Government. We hope they hear and understand your views on changes to the PRS, and we look forward to seeing the outcome of the consultation.

We've summarised the results of our survey over on our blog. Head over to find out more.

Don't be alarmed, but you could be breaking the law...

Did you know you're seven times more likely to have a fire if you're living in rented or shared accommodation?*

To help keep tenants safe and reduce their risk of having a fire or suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, the Government has introduced a new law for private landlords.

As of 1 October 2015, a working smoke alarm must be fitted on every storey of a rented property and tested regularly, and a carbon monoxide alarm must be fitted in every room that has a solid fuel burning appliance (coal fire or wood burning stove).

Over on our blog, Mark Hazelton, Group Manager for Community Safety Development at London Fire Brigade, talks about the new laws and what is expected of private landlords. Make sure you check it out.

November: the month for awards and exhibitions

On 3 November, we’re looking forward to meeting lots of you at the annual Negotiator Conference and Awards, for what promises to be a fantastic day.

We’ll be exhibiting at the Conference and Expo during the day, and at the evening awards ceremony we’re delighted to be sponsoring the Medium Lettings Agency of the Year award. We’re also up for an award ourselves, the Professional Support Supplier of the Year, so we’ll have our fingers crossed too.

We’re also supporting sponsors of the NALS Conference on 12 November. We’re pleased once again to be helping NALS continue the great work they deliver in the private rented sector.

A great year for dispute workshops!

In November, we’re hosting our last dispute workshops of the year at our home in Bristol. It’s been fantastic to share our adjudication expertise with so many of you over the past 12 months. Here’s what some of you had to say...

"I've now got a better understanding of how cases are dealt with and how important it is that as an agent we send clear evidence."

"I've got the confidence to negotiate [with the tenant] before a dispute, and have a clear understanding of how to collate and present dispute information for The DPS."

We’ve already started planning for next year’s workshops so if you missed your chance to attend, keep an eye on our events page or follow us on twitter to find out if we’re hosting a workshop near you in the future.
